Hpare is one of the most secluded IDP camps in the world, residents receive virtually no aid other than a small rice ration from the KIO. There’s little to no sanitation or healthcare, children face a severe risk of phenomena in the winter, as their clothes are often well worn and even collecting firewood can be difficult in the craggily hills.
In mid November the United Nations ‘hailed’ the signing of a ceasefire in Myanmar, describing it as “historic”. However, less than half of the armed ethnic groups involved in the process actually signed the agreement and fighting continues as the oldest civil wars in the world continues to rage along the country’s Northern borders.
